Don't dismiss eBay. It's still one of the largest online auction houses with products sold and shipped in the US and internationally.
As of this writing, eBay gets 790 million visitors a month, is ranked #12 most visited website in the United States, and ranked #26 globally.
Follow this guide to build a legitimate work from home business and make money from the comfort of your own dorm room.
When selling used items, the key is selling things that hold value. If you’re a student, start with things that you know and can sell to your same age group.
Lift your head up and look around right now, what do you see? Do you see anything you no longer need or want?
Some ideas for you might be textbooks, collectible comics, tech gadgets, jewelry, clothing, sunglasses. Make a list of slightly used items you have right now that can be easily shipped.
Use a phone or digital camera. Pay attention to your background and clear it of any clutter. Use a background that contrasts with the color of the item you're selling.
Take Instagram worthy pictures, from different angles. Try not to take too many pictures though, otherwise choosing the "best" ones will start to become a chore.
Let's say for example, you're going to sell a prom dress. Have someone wear and model the prom dress for you. Take pictures just below the eyes, with your model smiling, and showing about 6" inches of the legs at the bottom of the dress. Emphasis of the picture should be on the dress only. Use a plain background.
If you don't have a live model, you can attempt to find a mannequin. Last resort is to hang the dress up high and use a plain wall behind it. It’s also a good idea to include a picture of the tag, especially if it’s brand named.
Lighting is extremely important for pictures. Pay close attention to shadowing. Avoid using flash photography. Use indirect sunlight. The best is outside just as the sun sets. And make sure the light is to your back when you're shooting pictures of your items.
If you're taking pictures indoors, you can imitate natural daylight by using natural-daylight rated bulbs. It's also possible to create a makeshift indoor photo studio with just a few painters lights and bulbs.
Writing keywords into your listing title and description allow the eBay algorithm to identify your listing and show it to people who are searching for your type of item.
For example, if you are selling clothing, use the brand name, size and style type in your auction title. Take time to research other listings in the same category first before making your listing. You might find new keyword terms to use.
Only use abbreviations if that's what your buyer's are used to. Use the same type of language your potential buyers use. Use bullet points in your item's description to make it easy for people to read. Point out features, and always the benefits.
Market your eBay listings through all of your social media channels. Make a post on Facebook with a link to your listings asking friends to share the link to people who might be interested.
Other than socializing, this is a good use of time while you're online. Spreading the word creates followers.
Keeping people posted about sales you're making on eBay might even open up a whole new opportunity for you to teach others how to do the same.
Finding items to sell on eBay is easy. With wholesale websites like Alibaba and Aliexpress, getting product shipped in bulk at wholesale cost has never been more accessible than right now.
The more you sell, the more you'll know about the business of selling online and the technology behind it.
When your friends start seeing how much you’re able to make by selling online, they'll come to you with questions and proposals.
Let them know what it takes to sell stuff online. And then offer to teach them what you know for a fee. As long as what you teach can cover the cost of your fee, you'll have an offer nobody can refuse.
Then the next legitimate work from home business you can make money online with won't require any physical products at all. Just information that you can store online.
